SEO has boomed over the last couple of years and there is no surprise, because if you have a website and you want to be seen then SEO is essential but there are a lot of people out there offering bad SEO services or bad SEO advice so I wanted to make a run down off things to avoid when carrying out SEO yourself or employing someone to do it.
Avoid link Directories
Link directories are websites that allow you to list your site among thousands of others to create multiple links to your site in the hope that Google will improve your site's ranking. The theory behind link directories is correct because in the simplest form Google does look at how many links you have to your site to judge it's importance. But, and it is a big but, Google has a team of highly skilled developers who quickly saw the flaws in this idea. Google still use links to determine a site's importance but they have caught on to these link directories or link farms and if your website is found to be using them, then Google may remove your site from it's search engine all together. Being removed from Google altogether means almost no-one will find your website... and it is very difficult to convince Google to reverse the ban.
So if you are trying to carry out SEO on your site yourself, you may have read some blogs that suggest using certain link farms or directories and you may find out that the person who owns the blog also owns the link farm, surprise, surprise.
If you are hiring someone else to do SEO for you then you need to make sure you ask them the right questions too. Most SEO could take months to even start to see the results but you may find some people promising top page of Google in a matter of weeks and for very cheap. You should be very suspicious of these people because they may be using link farms or directories. They may get you onto the first page of Google within a couple of weeks but you will not stay there. Google sometimes take a little while but they will find out where the links came from and they will punish your website but by this time, your so called SEO consultant will be long gone and will have left you with a large, expensive task to sort your website out.
